Winter Ahead for the Apple Orchard?

By Robert Perrego, at 5:08 pm on March 6th, 2009

Apple Inc. (NDSQ: AAPL) has been hitting consumer product after consumer product out of the park for years now.  The iPod, the MAC that also runs Windows, a killer laptop and then their crowning gadget jewel – the iPhone.

Well, just as the legions of Apple supporters were ready to consider themselves all thing pinnacle of the electronic consumer gadget market along come the Palm Pre.

Did you say Palm?  I thought they went out of business.  Palm is out with a sleek new phone and the benefit of what happens when you have to build your business and a new product from scratch – you just might start over and build an entirely new operating system.

Two nights ago I was speaking with my brother in Austin, Texas on my iPhone.  My brother is a programmer for a large firm and he has been looking into programming phone apps on the side.  He told me that while the Windows mobile OS was more widely distributed than Apple’s and while the most widely used mobile OS is the Nokia’s, the best one hands down in his opinion is the new Palm Pre OS.

Well it seems Roger McNamee of Elevation Partners thinks so to.

Steve Jobs has his health problems, the iPhone is now officially under assault and all those Mac laptops must be looking way overpriced to the growing legions of the unemployed.

Is The Bloom Off The Rose?

By Taryn Cooper, at 2:56 pm on February 9th, 2009

On a day where Amazon introduced the new Kindle 2 e-book reader, Microsoft also announced its new online bazaar for “Smart Phone” apps.

These headlines caught my attention for several reasons.

One is – even in a recessionary period, tech can still pique the interest of so-called “fan boys” of these types of gadgets.  Though Stephen King said there will still be a need for books in the traditional paper form though these e-books are incredibly helpful, it’s evident that consumers will still find the money to test these new electronic-media based products (not to mention the lack of paper waste will make any green-fanatic interested).

The other is – Microsoft is finally coming up to speed with its mobility products and bolstering it’s cellphone strategy, according to the Journal.  It’s no secret that Microsoft is way behind in the times with getting its competition to the iPhone or Blackberry.  But this is an interesting concept – work on the applications availabitlity and it’s distribution?

My last thought was on since it’s release in July 2008, the iPhone has kind of taken a backseat to other new gadgets being released such as a G1 T-Mobile Google Phone and the Blacberry Pearl Flip (which has those incredibly funny commercials).

Can the bloom be off the rose for the electronic gadget darling Apple iPhone?  Or should we be hearing about the next generation iPhone in the upcoming months?
